Ruth Bennett Community Farm is an educational farm and environmental education center. Recognizing the need for greater food security and community health over the past decade, the Chester Housing Authority (CHA) created a two-acre community farm on vacant land at the Ruth L. Bennett Homes in 2008.
Farm Manager Natania Schaumburg
Natania Schaumburg has been the farm manager at Ruth Bennett for the last two seasons. She has worked on community food systems projects over the last 5 years, and completed an apprenticeship program at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at the University of California Santa Cruz in 2016. She is excited about all of the infrastructural projects that have been completed at the farm recently, including installing water and electricity, a heated greenhouse, and a walk-in cooler. She is also looking forward to expanding programming such as the farm stand as well as activities for Chester residents and programs for youth. And she’s ecstatic about all the beautiful flowers in bloom at the farm!
During the 2018 season, the farm has collaborated with the East Park Revitalization Alliance’s Beginning Farmer Team of Philadelphia, who bring their urban farming knowledge and experience working with youth to the Bennett Farm.
